Project

‘VeSBUD: Very Small and Small Businesses and Urban Development’ is a research project funded by the 2nd Call for H.F.R.I.’s Research Projects to Support Faculty Members & Researchers.

The VeSBUD project aims at throwing light on some of the aspects of the entrepreneurship – urban development nexus that have not been researched yet by the academic community, and offering new ways of looking at the ontologies of MSBs, in relation to urban development, resilience, and the production of urban space.

More specifically, VESBUD will investigate the emergence and wider impacts of MSBs in a critical urban studies and economic geography perspective.

Scientific Objectives

  1. To provide a better understanding of the emergence and variations of entrepreneurship and small firms in the context of rising social and economic challenges in Greek cities;

  2. To critically analyze the impact of entrepreneurship on business owners/ employees and on urban/neighborhood development processes;

  3. To explore the various paths through which cities, viewed as complex multiscalar systems and sources of considerable external economies interrelate with the emergence of entrepreneurship.

The Cases

VeSBUD project will study the impact of three different cases in three Greek cities: the vibrant gastronomy scene in Thessaloniki (the second most sizeable metropolitan area of the country), the dominant tourist sector in Corfu (a smaller city specialized in tourism), and the social and solidarity economy ecosystem of the city of Karditsa (a medium-sized city in the predominantly agricultural region of Thessaly).

Target Groups

VeSBUD targets primarily MSBs and non-conventional types of entrepreneurs, the local population related to them, as well as institutional and informal actors, e.g., the local authorities, the organized and informal networks of firms, etc. in the three case study cities. These groups, alongside the academic community, will be the main stakeholder groups of the project, having specific impacts on them throughout its life cycle.
